About The Artwork

I painted this scene looking over a shallow creek in Georgia on the farm where my dad grew up. I set my easel up by the side of the dirt road, and the front leg sank deep into a fire ant bed and was swarmed by angry insects. Other than that, it was a beautiful day and by the time I finished painting, the ants had gone back to doing whatever they had been doing before. This painting was inspired by the Fauves' usage of color, as well as brushwork of Edo period Japanese painting. I hope to capture the graceful forms of the leaves with the speed necessary when painting a scene that can fundamentally change with the passing of a cloud or a strong breeze. Working on site forces intense observation and concentration for this reason.
