About The Artwork

This work is part of a series inspired by travels in Japan and taking part in meditation sessions at Mt Koya (Koyasan). I made a number of onsite sketches of waterfalls, mountain streams and local temples and then developed these in my studio. The final work contains some calligraphic-style marks, impasto texture and many layers of thin glazes to build luminosity and depth. Turner is a big influence on my work as well contemporary artist Cruz Jimenez and Chinese artists Zao Wou-ki and Chu Teh Chun. I wanted to create a feeling of movement and transience but in a meditative, almost blissful way.

I was born in Kent, UK and have lived in London, Leicester and Auckland, New Zealand. I studied Graphic Design and worked as a designer for 25 years, juggling running a design practice with painting and exhibiting my art. Gradually the art has taken over from the design and I’ve been a full time artist since 2016.
