About The Artwork

In Catalonia Spain, Poble Vell de Corbera mounts their Biennal d’Art to provide a space for reflection amidst the historical ruins from the Spanish Civil War and to serve as a tool for the dissemination of human rights and a showcase for contemporary artistic creation. The fourth Biennial Art Exhibition on Human Rights has chosen as the theme the 19th and 27th articles of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which refer to Freedom of Expression and Culture. For my panel at the IV Biennal d'Art at Corbera d’Ebre, Spain I address the theme of Freedom of Expression through the images and words of demonstrators around the world. In the process of producing the artwork I began to feel a connection to these brave individuals who have spoken out in favour of human rights. I call the work Démocratie, Democracia, Democracy… a common theme with which we can all empathize. The statue of Marianne at the Place de la République in Paris was a focal point for the Charlie Hebdo demonstrations. Here Liberty is represented by an ordinary woman, standing up for her rights, an icon of freedom and democracy against all forms of dictatorship. In the background the stars of the European flag represent the ideals of unity, solidarity and harmony. Around the statue I have chosen slogans and images from various 2014-15 demonstrations: From Hong Kong… 勿忘初衷, matmong cocung, or “don’t forget our original intention” (to demand true democratic elections) and a youth holding an umbrella From Paris… ‘je suis CHARLIE’, a demonstrator holding a large pencil and ‘A la terreur nous répondons par plus de Démocratie’ held by a demonstrator From Spain… ‘INDIGNADOS’, ‘BASTA ‘, ‘LO LLAMAN DEMOCRACIA’ and demonstrators banging pots From the USA… ‘You Are the 99% From India… ‘ENOUGH is ENOUGH’ From Tunisia… Hands holding flowers From Mexico City… two hands and a woman shouting This work is comprised of two paper panels; in the front blue panel I have cut out the pattern which reveals parts of the back grey panel where I have placed the yellow stars of the flag of the European Union

I think of myself as a humanist, an artist whose practice is fully engaged in the real world. I see my studio practice as a way of trying to come to terms with that reality and as a vehicle to share my response with others. I grew up in the Cold War world of the Cuban missile crisis, the Kennedy assassination, the Vietnam War and the Nixon impeachment. As a child I would climb up into the tree tops seeking a refuge and a sanctuary. Since the end of the Cold War, I have watched the world descend into political, economic and environmental chaos; I see the natural world which I always believed would persevere threatened by man's actions. Many wonder what the role of an artist is in such circumstances. I believe that we cannot depend on 'those who are supposed to take care of us'. I believe that we each have to take some personal responsibility by doing whatever we can. I want to create strong, powerful images which will have an emotional and physical effect on the viewer. I hope that my work can in some way make viewers more aware of their place as part of the natural world.
