About Yovo Yovchev With the terms of modern painting, the artist Yovo Yovchev is most similar to abstract expressionism, while of course applying his personal understanding of this school. The expressive material which Yovo constructs in his pictures corresponds to the freedom of self-expression. He uses color and mask in a different way by consciously limiting and reducing himself – it is almost as though in some places we see a peculiar ascetic aesthetic, in others we see one that is extravagant and generous. All of these elements are nuances of his artistic style. Expressionism is one of the facades of his artistic individuality. The other side is a very cultivated and lyrical artist who invites contemplation. The expressive factor does not seem to shock the viewer at first, it is brilliant, even aggressive, but the second layer is distinguished by a delicate understanding for the specifics of the painting area and painting material, which initiates а contemplative mood in the viewer. And this initial inconsistency contains the characteristic which is the artist’s personal touch/style, the author’s individuality, his understanding of that which we call abstract expressionism. Yovo Yovchev is an artist who places great importance on aesthetics. This is obvious in his drawings. He skillfully plays with the body, especially the female body, but also with the face, he allows himself to explore exquisitely hyperbolized deformations – but always maintaining the refined aesthetic of the lines and composition. I myself personally perceive them as a counterpoint to that which he does in painting. These are two facets of one author. On a deep, profound level this is the same author, with two sides of creativity which appear in different ways, but show an organic artist, connected to both the expressionism and lyrical abstraction. And all of this is in conjunction with a very distinguished and sensitive author. Professor Chavdar Popov, art reviewer. 08.10.2016, television show “Recipe for Culture”, BNT 2
