Born in Paris in 1950, Philippe Caille lives and works in Aix-en-Provence (south of France). A curious mind, both literary and scientific, a former student of the École Polytechnique (a world class engineering school), Philippe Caille was committed to painting in a complete, absolute, irreversible way. Although impregnated by tribal arts, the Flemish primitives, and the Italian Renaissance, it evolves resolutely in contemporary art. His inspiration is rooted in past history, but also in the present. Starting from there, he projects himself in a determined way into a recomposed reality. His approach to oil work is very singular. He combined computer designs (composition, colours) with classic techniques of the Flemish primitives (grinding pigments, making varnishes). A technical choice linked to the pleasure of the treatment of colour and shape. The artist favours the enigma of his subjects, and the elusiveness of his characters, his cities or his landscapes. Between solitude and cruelty, light and darkness, ambiguity reigns, sowing confusion in undefined spaces...
