During the time of the Plague, this genre of "Death Comes for the Maiden," depicting a young woman being carried off, or even kissed, by a decaying, emaciated corpse became very common. The symbolism is obvious, but what struck me was the similarity between the corpse and the anorexic body type. It immediately begged for a contemporary reimagining to explore this relationship. An additional aspect of this painting is the consideration of how "body goals" have evolved over the centuries in western visual media. Lastly, my family is bi-racial, so I have observed first hand the difference in attitude toward body type and body image between different subgroups within our American culture. This painting is a meditation on these issues. As a father of pre-teen daughters, I have a front row seat for how complicated it is to negotiate issues of physical health, body positivity, and societal expectations. As a man, I also feel the pressure to live up to societal expectations, but for whatever reason, the ideal for masculine beauty (with the exception of hair/beard styles) has remained fairly constant since antiquity. Though I currently fall short of the male ideal, at least it not a moving target. My wife and daughters have to deal with body expectations that shift to conform to each new fashion season.
