Olmec and Maya were the people who created one of the "6 cradles of civilization". Especially the Maya have developed a great visual culture. Very colorful. Maya blue is famous. After more than 1000 years has it kept his original brillant color. They had great artists as "Och" the painter (coordinator?) of the Bonampak murals. An impressive, colorful composition over 3 rooms. Drawings of a very talented man (team?) From 1975 on to +- 1990 : Holocausto silencioso), the massacre of Maya civilians in Guatemala. 160.000 Maya victims of a total of 200.000 as a result of the civil war. Killed because they were Maya, the original people of the land. Since the beginning of the 21st century systematic exhumations to obtain a DNA profile and a name for the human remains. In a UN program of reconciliation, so the remains can be restituted to the family. However the budget is very restricted. Very few condemnations. In the painting we see Maya women discussing an exhumation of a massacre. the story they remember. Contemporary Maya around lake Atitlan have developed a unique colorful painting style. Art is in the genes of this people.

Belgium
Born in Roeselare Belgium in 1948. Employed as a chemical engineer in a pigment company. First in production, then in research. Phtalo blue and Prussian blue, yellow and red pigments all colors! In research, the assignment was to make an opaque form of the transparent pigments in an environmentally friendly way (high pressure cooking). Colors were therefore always 'familiar'. Fascinated by drawing from an early age. It was therefore obvious that once retired, a course was followed at the local academy (Kortrijk). Seven-year study drawing and painting. Hereby a special interest in pastel (pure pigment!). But also chalk, acrylic and oil paint. The style is that of the 19th century realists: Courbet, Millet, Meunier. Topics: A critical look at society: The 1940s, 50s, 60s. A panhumanistic vision whereby Western culture is only one among others.A culture who applies other standards to others than to itself....
