The concept of this piece arose from a theme which was focused around obsolescence and religion. I wanted to use a representation of the body as a symbol for atonement; for the unification of humanity through our shared anatomy. I have portrayed the figures as a reflection of each other. This refers the numerical theory that one cannot be transformed into the many via multiplication (as 1x1 equals 1) but via reflection (1+1 equals 2). Similarly one cannot reproduce without sexual unification. This theorises a humanity in which one aches for interaction, not just socially, biologically and sexually but also spiritually. I want this image to demand attention through the unapologetic presentation of genitalia but also to reach a viewer on a personal level. The subtle connection of the figures is not sexual but is relevant, it shows an attempt to connect which reflects intercourse. This conceptualises the idea that sex is the closest that an individual can become to another, it is a form of spiritual worship and a biologically procreative interaction. Sexual energy is the creative energy of the universe; all things that are alive come from sexual energy. This expresses a biological creativity that reflects the theological creation of the universe. This creation extends to a non-corporeal level in terms of ideas and consciousness and religion. I have referred to the divine proportion within the composition of this piece, which reflects the presence of phi within the body. This refers to the divinity of the human form, and the fact that every body is built in terms of phi. The proportions of the piece and the uncensored presentation of form represent the unity that humans can experience through the body. Not only sexually but also in the idea that we are anatomical copies of each other. We all have necks and nipples and feet and knees and hence we can all identify with common themes. This reflects the unifying qualities of religion.
