About The Artwork

John Birks Gillespie a.k.a. Dizzy Gillespie, born in Cheraw, South Carolina on October 21, 1917 and died on January 6, 1993 in Englewood, New Jersey, is a trumpeter, singer-songwriter and conductor of American jazz bands. With Louis Armstrong, Roy Eldridge, Henry "Red" Allen, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Thad Jones, he is one of the most important trumpeters in the history of jazz. With Charlie Parker, Kenny Clarke, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Mingus, he is one of the founding figures of the bebop style and he contributed to introduce Afro-Cuban rhythms into jazz. Dizzy Gillespie was particularly distinguished by his trumpet with the bell sloping upwards, he sometimes played with a mute. His toad-like cheeks, his joie de vivre and his devastating sense of humor were a big part of his popularity with the public. As a trumpeter, he is considered by his peers to be an outstanding virtuoso.

I am a passionate Dutch portraitist who lives and works in France (Blois). I paint personalities and people who touch me, inspired by their talent and vision of life. My paintings are a tribute to these artists of all kinds, authentic, pure and, in my opinion, talented. I started with figurative Portraits. Now I am experimenting with pop art and contrasting colors. I like to work in series: Forever 27, Jazz musicians and singers, Impressionist Painters, Pop Music Stars, French singing and musical artists. I am happy to share these portraits with you and invite you to discover them here.
