The central theme of my work is exploring the similarities of being seated within the metaphysical space of the body and of being inside the physical space of architecture. I associate the internal world with the sensation of floating and I represent this by unreliable or suspended gravity. Many of the paintings in this series have patches of blue-black velvet glued to them. The velvet swallows the light and gives an inky depth I cannot achieve with pigment on the paper. Visually, the spots of velvet provide grounding for the colors and the dubious gravity. The title is applied to the painting in a manner reminiscent of 18th scientific labeling. This painting is comprised of 4 sheets of paper taped together.

Terrell Lozada (b. 1962) is an American painter and sculptor living in Paris. She uses imagery and language to create works that explore the metaphysics of gender and power in contemporary society. Her work represents an internal, emotional world through objects subjected to unreliable or suspended gravity. Her aesthetic fulcrum is the late 18th century, particularly as it relates to French architecture. She works in a wide variety of media including watercolor, oil on panel, cast bronze, etchings and carved wood. She is currently exploring tin-glazed terracotta (faïence stannifère) to combine color and form.
