Drop of Water, Grain of Sand Painting

Two separate inspirations coalesced in this piece. While I was listening to one of my favorite blues songs, Edith Johnson's "Little Drops of Water," I saw in an article a photograph of the fossilized indentation of a drop of seawater in the Altai Mountains in China. The next line in Johnson's song is "great big grains of sand," hence the title of my piece, "Drop of Water, Grain of Sand," the water being the seawater, and the grain of sand being the mountain where the fossil was found. The tiny fossil reminded me of a womb, which got me thinking about Earth as mother and all the movements and evolution she has experienced throughout time. I wanted to enlarge this nearly overlooked fossil to emphasize the monumental changes it represents.
