"Early Morning Springtime Barn" Painting

"Early Morning Springtime Barn" The early morning light softens this old barn image. The barn is still in pretty good shape but the vines climbing up the side makes me feel it is no long in use. The fields hold early spring flowers that will turn to tall weeds come summer. The closed double doors indicate the barn may only be used to store farm implements. (Maybe an old tractor they use to cut the fields with.) The lack of livestock, and over grown weeds makes the barn itself feel like it will soon be abandoned. Over the last 25 years I've seen many farms and dairies sold then subdivided and houses built. The abandoned barns that remain are falling into disrepair. Last year I began to collect photos of the abandoned barns as reference for painting subjects. The textures and colors of rusted tin roofs, weathered boards and the overgrown landscapes inspired the artist in me. Trying not to paint in a photographic style, feels good to me. I like to see the heavy brushstrokes and thick layering of paint. The surface of the final artwork matches the aged barns and surrounding growth. For me, these paintings are taking on a time capsule effect as I'm afraid these barns will become fewer and harder to find.
