About The Artwork
Eartha Kitt was a singer, actor, dancer, activist, author and songwriter. With her distinctive singing style, she had two top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including the iconic "Santa Baby." In 1967, she starred as the Catwoman on TV's Batman. A year later, anti-Vietnam statements made by Eartha at the White House derailed her career and put her under CIA surveillance. Years later, voice work on animated TV shows brought her two Daytime Emmys. This painting is part of a series: Women Sing The Blues. After watching a documentary about Sister Rosetta Tharpe, I started thinking about other female artists who fought to have their voices heard - pioneers who influenced generations of singers and musicians. It is in these paintings, I wanted to capture their strength and beauty.
