ABOUT THE ARTWORK
"Eartha" was inspired by an old photograph of Eartha Kitt in the role of Catwoman, as well as Leonardo DaVinci's "Portrait of a Lady". My objective with this painting was to capture Eartha's likeness, but also to play with colour and tonality - very low-light palette with little contrast. I feel like this accentuates the mystery and the strength of the subject's gaze. The paint has been applied in thin layers on a wood panel. The sides are painted black.

She has had several solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in, Quebec, Canada and the United States, and is a recipient of grants from both Quebec and Canada Arts Councils. Hayes' work can be found in private and public collections, such as the Art Bank of the Canada Council, Loto Quebec, La Grande Bibliothèque du Québec and the Musée du Québec. Hayes lives and works in Montreal.
