About The Artwork

This series is inspired by working with Alicia Tormey, who works with the lacy effects of using burnt shellac, both natural and pigmented. This is a companion piece to Earthly Remains 1. Although these are abstract pictures, each one might suggest the swirling, overlapping areas in a natural phenomenon, such as an earthquake, or volcano erupting, or a stormy sky. Or it might be merely shapes, lines, and colors to another’s eye. I used the ancient painting technique of encaustic, which means to “burn in.” Encaustic was used as far back as the 5th C. BC on ships’ hulls to decorate and preserve the wood. First, I painted the surface of this wood platform with white tinted gesso to create a smooth and bright surface for the wax. Then I applied layers of hot beeswax mixed with a hardening agent called damar resin. Then I heat each layer with a heat gun or torch to adhere it to the layer beneath it. For this piece and Earthly Remains Two, I also applied black and red ochre pigmented shellac (made with dry pigment mixed and clear shellac), then painted it on the wax surface. When “ripe” enough to fuse, I heated with torch to create these filigree marks. There are also marks drawn with India ink and personally whittled stick. The colors of black, white, and red is a favorite palette of mine. Ready to hang in deep frame with gold background and gold front edges.

Making art is an encore career for me. Years ago when I hosted a community access TV show called “Alivelihood:New Adventures As We Age,” I interviewed an artist who had been a German professor. She invited me to her art studio. I loved painting and collaging with her immediately and never stopped painting. Soon I discovered the ancient , now popular medium of encaustic, hot pigmented wax, and was enraptured with the possibilities. I studied with many sterling artists learning to make mono prints and paintings with the wax and a torch to burn each layer to the one beneath. I attended workshops at the International Encaustic Conference in Provincetown each spring. Next, I added acrylic and mixed media to my repertoire. My most recent paintings are created with oil mixed with cold wax and sometimes a medium to increase flow and transparency. The subject matter that intrigues me lately is painting the abstracted, distorted human figure, often with backgrounds depicting a fantasy room or landscape. My life outside of art encompasses many wonderful things: living in the country in Massachusetts with my husband of 40+ years and 2 adorable rescue dogs from Mexico, dancing Argentinian tango and studying with one of the world's most accomplished teachers, still riding my horse a little bit, wintering in San Miguel de Allende, MX to name a few.
