Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, an epic poem written between 1308 and his death in 1321, is the inspiration for this painting. The painting encapsulates an ascent to a region beyond physical existence to the Empyrean, the home of God. The bear figures wander aimlessly beneath a formless, billowy and otherworldly sky. Contrasting colors for the sky and the surface the bears are standing on mark the division between these two planes. The figures seem as if they will rise from the surface through the sky towards Heaven and complete the ultimate ascendance to the highest realm.
