About The Artwork

There are many many artists throughout history that can blow your mind, but sometimes you come across one that reminds you just how high the bar is. The amazing thing about Mondrian to me is the immense distance between his early works (which are VanGogh-like and amazing) and the geometric masterpieces we all recognize from the end of his career. The evolution of his work is so intense yet it all makes perfect sense when you thumb through any coffee table book or catalogue of his. His foundational ideas of balance and color clearly jumped to Lichtenstein and had a huge influence on what we now call Pop-Art. He might even be the grandfather of the Pop-Art aesthetic – bold simple colors and hard edges. Any of his later works are easy to copy but I wanted to pay homage to Mondrian nonetheless. I love ideas of negative space and this was the perfect opportunity to incorporate one so obviously into a pin.

Upstate NY painter, Todd Koelmel enjoys a practice that allows a back & forth flow between digital and analog art. His graphic style and use of hard edges lends itself to simplification – a boiling down that’s both nostalgic and modern. “Before professionally painting, I spent a chunk of my early career in the fight to slow climate change. Now my focus lies on visually representing a deep love for the environment, as well as documenting contemporary life in a style that resonates with young minded people - and pays respect to the lineage of art history.” Todd began showing his work in 2018 and is grateful for a growing group of collectors across North America and Europe. Work begins in the digital realm where the artist can balance design and tweak colors with absolute freedom. With intricate masking and complex stencils, Todd converts his digital images into large, handmade oil paintings. The integration of digital tools into a traditional art practice helps to present a fresh and modern style that anyone who grew up on cartoons can relate to. Subject matter ranges widely from bucolic Hudson Valley landscapes, to abstract sunsets, and on to pop culture satire & iconography.
