Anything you pay a lot of attention to becomes important. These weeds are painstakingly painted with a tiny brush in the opposite order you would think. First, I painted the entire canvas orange, then painted the water around everything else in translucent layers to preserve the luminosity of the underlying layers. The orange shimmers through everything.

Brooke Lanier received her Masters of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Tyler School of Art, where she spent her first year of graduate school studying in Rome, Italy. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has shown her work in Rome, Italy; Prague, Czech Republic; and across the United States, most notably in The Smithsonian Institute’s S. Dillon Ripley Center and the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Lanier currently resides in Philadelphia where she continues her studio practice and teaches at Tyler School of Art. She is the owner of brooke lanier fine art, a gallery which showcases subtle, nuanced interpretations of contemporary landscapes by established and emerging artists.
