ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is a hand painted Japanese Enso circle with a Japanese Calligraphy. This is an authentic hand painted original artwork, not a print. Hanging words in your home that mean a lot to you can help you re-center yourself in your daily life. Seeing those words can be a chance for you to stop, take a deep breath, think about what is truly important to you, and remember that you live in this moment. This calligraphy painting is a wonderful gift for anyone who loves Japanese & Asian cultures, minimalist, martial art practitioners, Yoga practitioners, or someone wants to have a symbol of mindfulness. ----- About this painting This Japanese calligraphy with an Enso 円相 was made with freshly made Sumi ink and created with Japanese Shodo (Calligraphy) technique. Size: 22”x22” Materials used for the painting: Sumi ink, Handmade double Xuan paper (stretched) ・ About this painting This Enso 円相 was made with freshly made Sumi ink and created with Japanese Shodo (Calligraphy) technique. ・The word is a Japanese four Kanji idiom, 一期一会 Ichi-go Ichi-e Meaning: Once-in-a-life- time-encounter/meeting. - Every encounter/meeting with people or object could be a Once-in-a-life- time opportunity. So we should keep this in our mind and embrace it and appreciate it. ----- ・ What is 円相 “Enso” It's a one stroke ink brush circle and it's originally came from a Zen culture. 円 --- means “Circle” 相 --- means “Face” It was to see your mind in the one stroke brush paint. Each moment is different. What kind of circle you can create with only one brush stroke may vary and unique in each pieces – as you can almost see your inner mind place. (*The Enso in this painting is a designed Enso created with multiple strokes.) ------------------------ *about my Sumi Art background: I was trained Shodo (Japanese Calligraphy) since when I was 4 or 5 years old under my father who was a master Shodo painter. Shodo and Sumi-E painting is my roots, my culture, and my father's legacy. They are beautiful traditional arts and I deeply appreciate my father who taught me and my heritage. ------------------------- *What is "Shodo", Japanese Calligraphy Shodo is a Japanese word for Japanese Calligraphy, and it is written 書道. The first characator, 書, means “writing”, and the second character, 道, means “path” or “way of life”. The Kanji (Chinese character), 道 is often associated with many names of other Japanese cultural activities, like 華道 Japanese flower arrangment、茶道 Japanese tea ceremony、柔道 Jyu-do、空手道 Karate-do、and 剣道 Ken-do. It represents that those cultural activities and martial arts are not just learning things but they are a “way of life”. In Shodo, it is the use of sumi paint and bamboo brushes to create calligraphy. It’s history is very long, going back more than 2000 years. It was originally started in China, then came to Japan around the 6th century. It was part as part of Zen buddhism culture which developed in Japan.
