Erosion Painting

Painting: Encaustic, (resin and beeswax) with mixed-media on a wood panel. The inspiration for Erosion is both the physical and cultural environments. This work is a part of my series, Bound and Determined. The focus of the series is various grids/lines and their representation. For me, the grids, with their tears, holes, flaws and stitching express the order we have expected our lives would have against the reality of just trying to keep our lives together every day. The day to day ripping of the seams we set out to bring back to the perfect symmetry we were led to believe existed. The series is encaustic - a mixture of resin, beeswax and pigments painted in a molten state with the many layers fused with a torch. It is actually an ancient medium that has had a resurgence in the past several decades. I enjoy working with encaustic as a medium because of the raw, organic feel when working with it and the strong textural look with a layered translucence of the finished product. It evokes both soft and strong qualities My work is wired and ready to hang. This work is painted on 2.5" deep wood panels. The natural wood sides are varnished and framing is not necessary.
