Evening in the City Painting

After I have finished a painting I often have some interesting colours on my palette which I will sometimes use as a starting point for another painting. This painting was started using colours left over from "Let all the Children Boogie," for which I was mixing pinks and purples. "Evening in the City began with purple and dark red stripes; these are hard colours to start with as they tend to be very dominant. Fortunately I was able to brighten them with some blues, tame them with ochre, and add light with cream and contrast this with a dark brown. I like to use white or almost white as a colour. The name was suggested by the colours, as a companion piece to "Daybreak in the City." It makes me think of light glinting from glass doors and gleaming brass fittings, with luxurious goods in the darkness beyond.
