"Flute Player" Painting

Born Doncaster, UK in 1952.
Graduated in Town and country Planning in 1976. After 12 years of working as a researcher, a planner, a business systems analyst and a highly paid bullshitter decided to pack my bags and head for pastures green. Subsequently spent 12 years travelling and painting my way around Asia.

In 2000 I came to reast in Korea where i have lived ever since with my Korean wife who I met while living in the holy city of Puri, in Orissa.

life in Korea has provided me with the opportunity to extend my painting skills and get to know many Korean artists.

As an artist I seek to interact with the world through my paintings. I see myself as a visual story teller. Just as with a book where the reader draws on his or her own experience, memory and imagination to bring the text to life; I feel that my paintings are not completed until they are seen and reacted to. I dont expect everyone to see my paintings in the same way or draw the same conclusion as to their meaning. The intension of my work is to move the viewer in some way.

In the 16 years that I have been seriously painting my style has changed and evolved. I began by using an intuitive, abstract surrealistic style; drawing inspiration from not only my immediate environment but also philosophical and metaphysical concepts.

In the last few years I have moved towards realism, focusing particularly on the human face. These days I am attempting to combine both styles in a form of surrealistic symbolic realism in order to deal with broader human issues and sharpen my visual story telling.
