ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The water tower at Campbell has great sentiment for me. About a mile from where Jules lived when she relocated from London 6 months before her family, you could see this from her apartment balcony. It stands watch like a centurion over the city, looking out for the locals. I’d been wanting to paint it for 2 years, and finally found it bathed in beautiful golden hour light and caught my moment. The background is painted in glazes of whites mixed with turquoise and grey on a 30 X 40 heavyweight but smooth canvas. This offsets the tower, painted in thick strokes of Indian yellow, golds, Indian reds and oranges that shimmer against the turquoise shadows.

I’m pretty sure I could draw long before I learned to walk. Art for me was my calling, my passion and as a creative director, it’s also been my job. The great thing about advertising is the amount of world-class creative people you meet, from fellow ideas people, to illustrators, writers, photographers and film makers - pioneers who channel every waking moment in perfecting their craft. It’s inspiring working with people who care about every single pixel, stroke, sound and word they put their names too. I’ve been ludicrously spoilt in my career - travelling extensively and soaking up the culture in some extraordinary places. So, when in 2019 we were lucky enough to be given the chance to relocate from London to California, we grasped the opportunity. The astonishing light and picturesque scenes around our home in Los Gatos, lured me to my paints - and I began to feverishly produce canvases in every spare moment I could muster. I’ve evolved a style that distances the viewer from the subject, applying incandescent California light to London greys. Drawing heavily from my graphic design background, I use a strong graphical element in my composition and the finest materials available. In September 2021 I left my job to make the work I love, and bring joy into people’s homes.
