About The Artwork

This oil painting on linen is inspired by the nature goddess who personifies Earth and was one of the Greek primordial deities. Gaia is the ancestral mother of all life: the primal Mother Earth goddess. I was particularly pleased with the bay leaves which were picked from my garden and painted on her forehead. This painting is one of a pair, the other being ' Winter - Madonna.'

My name is Pete Davies. During my life I have played and composed music, cooked and gardened, all of which are my way of expressing my emotional ideas in media. I think of my paintings therefore as a means of expression my feelings using oil and paper. Although I paint constantly, I am drawn to portraiture to landscape. I tend to shy away from meaningful art as it is usually the exact opposite of what it sets out to be, and none of it is really new. It always reminds me of Mick Jagger singing: 'Doing things I used to do, they think are new,' or Pete Townshend writing, 'Here comes the new boss, same as the old boss.' Art for me is not precious. It's simply a practical product that I hope others will enjoy. I tend to follow the concept that Vasari spoke of in the Lives of the Artists, where he described the guilds of artists as being able to make anything from an enamel button to a marble tomb. My favourite work is portraiture. One other thing, I have just completed a very exciting commission from Twiggy and her husband, Leigh Lawson. Here's what they wrote: Dear Pete, Good to talk to you last week and reiterate how very much we admire and enjoy your work. When first viewing your paintings the composition, colour palette and ability to capture that particular moment in time was immediately captivating, and impressed us enormously. We would also like to say thank you so much from us both for the lovely painting you did of us. We will hang it in our home and happily recommend your work to all who admire it. Kindest regards and thanks from us both, Twiggy & Leigh Lawson Other useful stuff: I first attended Eastbourne College of Art School but then life took me to the North Sea and the diving industry. A few years back I decided to paint life in the offshore world of the North Sea before it disappeared forever. Since then I have been shortlisted for the following exhibitions: The Royal Society of Oil Painters The Columbia Threadneedle Prize The New English Art Club The Royal Society of Portrait Painters The Royal Society of British Artists My work has appeared at : The South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts Sticks Art Gallery, Fareham The Risborough Gallery, Buckinghamshire The Aberdeen Arts Fair.
