David Howells was born in Leicester, England in 1960. He emigrated to Canada in 1972. The landscapes which attract me most, are simple rural scenes having an old worldly feel. These landscapes seem to be becoming scarcer.
I paint primarily traditional, pastoral landscapes and garden scenes in oil on canvas. The paintings appear as though high realism, but when viewed more closely, resemble Impressionism. Light and depth are key aspects of my work helping to create a strong sense of atmosphere. Each painting is done in five to seven layers of paint, depending on its complexity. The biggest influences on my work would be John Constable and the work of the French Impressionists; especially Monet, Pissarro and Sisley.
