About The Artwork

‘Giant Panda’s’ is painted with oils and silver leaf on canvas. It forms part of a series of paintings called ‘In the Balance’ which focused on the magnificence of some critically endangered animals superbly painted in Alexander’s hyper-realistic style. The panda’s, which are painted with detail in oil are enjoying chewing on their favorite food, bamboo. The ‘bamboo forest’ is gilded with silver leaf and tinted lightly with transparent green oil paint. There is another interesting dimension to the artwork. When one looks closer more bamboo can be seen. This has been embossed underneath the silver leaf. The beauty of gilding is that when the artwork is hung on a wall it reflects light and as the light changes throughout the day, so does the artwork. The light will expose the bamboo and at other times it will remain hidden. The inspiration to paint the Giant Panda’s was to give hope for its survival. To bring it before the viewer and create awareness about the plight of this fragile subject matter. The rarest member of the bear family, pandas live mainly in bamboo forests high in the mountains of western China, where they live almost entirely on bamboo. They must eat from 12 to 38 kilograms of it every day. Hunting remains a threat although poaching pandas for their fur has declined due to strict laws. Habitat loss is a continual threat as this reduces the panda’s access to the bamboo they need to survive.

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I work mostly in oils in the style of the traditional realist, but I also enjoy combining the art of gilding and texturing in my paintings. I prefer to paint recognizable objects or elements that can be observed in nature and I aim always to capture express subjects and themes about our world and the human condition, especially those things that cause us great joy or great sorrow.
