Glowing Seams Painting

This work emerged from observations of street gratings in York where I previously lived. The subsequent drawings and paintings and card reliefs/assemblages explore the relationship between the relative neutrality of the metal grid and the chaos of the contained rubbish. My initial interest was thus purely formal; I was intrigued by the possibilities in the contrast between the two types of stripes. The contained debris also initially provided an opportunity to explore a fundamental compositional form (that of laminations/ layers/sandwich) ; a compositional form that is the basis of many landscape paintings. In developing these micro urban landscapes they suggested a more diagrammatic register and the more graphic treatment reminiscent of that used in geological maps (a long held attraction).
