About The Artwork

Bodhidharma Zen ink painting and calligraphy. The art work is brushed on rice paper, mounted and ready to be framed. Bodhidharma, the first Patriarch of Zen in China, Japanese Daruma, Chinese Damo portrayed in a straightforward Zen style. I have always been a great admirer of Zen Master Hakuin's Daruma paintings, and inspired by his example I have raised the brush and painted this bright Daruma. The accompanying calligraphy pays homage to this exceptional Dharma Teacher, founder of Zen Buddhism. It says: 菩提達磨大師 Japanese: Bodai Daruma Daishi Chinese : Puti Damo Taishi English: Bodhidharma Grand Master Size of the Daruma painting in cm: h 138 x w 35 cm x 0,2 cm. Please note that the white borders showing in the 'View in A Room' image are not on the original artwork.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

My artwork comprises Zen calligraphy, watercolor and ink paintings, and abstract calligraphies. My mediums are ink, watercolors and natural pigments on rice paper, mainly Xuan paper. I wield the Chinese and Japanese brush, preferably the flexible sheep's hair brush. Many of my Zen calligraphies express the Emptiness teaching from the Heart Sutra, which has been the original inspiration for my Japanese calligraphy artwork. Other calligraphies focus on the teachings of the Diamond Sutra, Platform Sutra, or depict Zen koan, Zen poetry or single kanji. In my watercolors and ink paintings I strive for a pictorial synthesis of the subject, in the spirit of Japanese ink painting, using bold washes and vivid brush strokes.
