Green Earth Painting

Much of my work is stimulated by derelict industrial buildings, ruins and old rural churches and I often use the worn and scribbled-on character of their surfaces as inspiration in my painting. I work in an intuitive way, avoiding brushes wherever possible and rather relying on improvised tools to make gestural marks. I let myself be guided by the process and happy accidents as they occur. By building up layers of paint and wax, later excavating into the surface to reveal earlier activity, the paintings become timescapes. They not only explore the passage of time and making memories through my own mark-making but the work represents my attempt to try and preserve time, to hold the moment.
