About The Artwork

I use many things as the subject and inspiration for my work, however, it is the process in which a subject is painted that gives it meaning for me. I am a believer in the idea that ‘it’s not what you paint but how you paint it’, so it’s important that the way the subject matter is painted, sits within certain rules. For me this is equal to and part of the inspiration for the painting itself. Anything I try to paint has to abandon all perspective and depth. The background should be brought to the foreground as if to suffocate the objects that it previously sat behind, or to become part of them. I love the abstract idea of heavy grey winter skies enveloping the naked branches of a tree; as if to imagine the tree and sky fighting for space but at the same time holding each other in place. My paintings are built up with layer upon layer of thick textural paint to further contribute to the feeling of density and body of the subject matter, while also to disrupt any illusion of perspective and depth. I would like the viewer to enjoy the chaos and disorder of the canvas’s textural surface almost as much as viewing the painting as a whole. This painting is particularly inspired by greenery and the vibrant colours of nature in the summer time. Also the contrast of the strong shadows that are created when the summers day is at its brightest. I love the idea of this contrast - of things being strongly illuminated yet it is because of this that other things are hidden in the dark.

Tom Diamantopoulo started his career as a songwriter and musician in the influential band The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster. The band released three albums, released six UK Top 40 singles and toured the UK, Europe and America over the course of ten years. While music kept him busy up until his 30's he continued to pursue his first love - fine art, painting whenever he could. For the past 13 years, he has devoted his time fully to his art, developing and exploring his abstract style. He studied art at Northbrook College in Worthing, completing his art foundation course before going on to do a HND in fine art which would precede his degree at Canterbury. Because of his music career, his education in art was cut short and he was unable to complete his HND and art degree. He now works from his studio in Brighton creating large abstract paintings in oil. He sells his work internationally and was recently shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2021. His abstracts are large, colourful paintings, with layers of very thick textural paint, that are rooted in colourism and abstract expressionism. He was born colour blind yet despite this, he continues to explore his love for colour and art; expressing that through his enormous abstract paintings. Please feel free to contact me directly for any other inquiries.
