Happy Landscape III Painting

Hand embroidery, cotton threads on stretched silk. The art work is framed in a contemporary, slim, natural, wood frame and is ready to hang. Since I can remember, I liked to draw and make needlework. As a kid, all I wanted were colored pencils, paper, colored threads and scrapes of fabrics to create imaginary, happy and colorful future worlds. Over the years, as I evolved through different fields of visual arts, drawing was always a steady companion. When I decided to study architecture, I designed cityscapes and futuristic buildings soon to realize that they can exist only on paper. After graduating, I returned to my art but the geometrical nature of architecture stayed with me forever. While I was using my pencils, I noticed that each stroke of color on paper can be a stitch of thread on fabric but with more impact on the eye giving the work a totally new feel and dimension. That’s how I started drawing with threads. Through trial and error, with each work I learned from my mistakes, perfecting my technique. I stretch canvas or heavy silk on rectangular wooden frames to form my blank “piece of paper”. A sketch made with a pencil provides the outline of a future work. As I lay the threads, one stitch at the time, the composition takes a life of its own, evolving beyond the original sketch, to morph in a work of intuitive creation. Sometimes, a geometric feel dominates other times I end up with organic, maze like composition. However, color is the driving force of my art. To obtain more vibrant shades, I stitch multiple colored layers on top of each other’s. I’m using the same process to give depth to certain areas, playing with positive and negative spaces. This technique is laborious. Only a couple of works are completed each year. The result it is a unique piece of art that incorporates traditional embroidery technique into a modern visual creation. The time spend working on each piece, it gives me the opportunity to immerse myself in the creative process rewording me with tremendous pleasure. My colorful, happy and playful works makes me escape in the imaginary world of my childhood. My hope is that someone will notice my works and connect emotionally with them in my “make believe” happy colorful world. Other features: Medium & materials: fiber, cotton threads on silk.
