ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I have painted many haystack, this is one of my best. If you have ever lived on a ranch, cattle ranch, or dairy farm, then you know what this is, what it looks like. In the old days people used to stack this by hand, and one of my students SP Reid, used to 'buck hay' on a dairy in Arcata, California as a summer job during high school. Bucking hay meant picking the hay bales up out of the field, while walking behind the tractor pulling a trailer, throwing the hay bales up on the trailer while a person on the trailer stacked the hay, then the full trailer was brought somewhere where the same workers 'bucked' the hay into a stack like you see here. Bucking hay used to be one of the most grueling jobs on a ranch, it took strength and endurance plus balance, not many people would be able to do it, and for sure lazy people would rather not work then do this job. Those were the old days when there was much more manual labor performed on ranches and farms.

I was born and raised in Shanghai, China. I grew up studying the old and current Chinese masters as well as internationally known current and past masters. I paint and draw at the highest level in ANY style dating back to A.D. 900, from any notable period in art history. I have taken the position at a very young age that I would put in the work needed to become the best that I can be. I teach private lessons to a few select students. I specifically train them in the realities of being a good artist; one must practice like Rembrandt for starters and work your way into your own style with no shortcuts. I start them out in the techniques from the renaissance. There is much complaining, but in the end when they realize what they are capable of with the skills they're learning, and start getting compliments from the schoolteachers and winning contests, then the complaining stops. Some of my students under the age of 10 are competing against professional adult artists in open competitions and winning with traditional pencil cross hatch sketches. Some of the work they are doing is world class. I have lived in the United States since 1987, and am married to an Irish American lady for the past 25 years. Our permanent home is in San Francisco, California, but I travel between my studios which are located in the old historic Chinese town of Locke, California, a studio on the beach in South Florida, one in New York, NY, near Central Park, another near Aspen, Colorado, and a historical Victorian owned by the first Doctor in Stockton, California which is a project in itself keeping everything in shape as it is a massive old amazing Victorian 'mansion', that is really just a big house. I spend some time in China, mostly Shanghai during the year as well. As my career has progressed, the demands from patrons, and collectors of my work, donations to their causes, and keeping up with producing some of the largest oil paintings in the world plus teaching selected young students, and a few older ones, it keeps me very busy. My schedule is planned out 12 months in advance every year, and I still find time to practice sketching at least 3 drawings every day as I have for the past 50+ years. I am born to be an artist and am happy to call the United States my home, I welcome you to seriously study my work and enjoy or start collecting it now. Some of my work is already in permanent collections of notable universities and museums, and many private and corporate collections.
