Each painting in the collection is inspired by and connected to remembered stories from the artist's childhood. Genevieve Leavold chose the subject of memory in this series because her own is so fragmented. The brushwork in these paintings is loose, the marks relate to this sense of fragmentation as the layers build. This collection is the artist's first monochromatic series in oils. The artist chose to reduce the colour to a minimum in order to focus on the forms and movement. "I chose to work in a pared-back palette of black and warm white, to focus on the forms. While creating these works I remembered that an early fascination with drawing came from making bark rubbings as a young child, I found the process of taking an image from the surface to me like magic. I want to share some of the magic that I feel when painting with the viewer and chose the monochromatic palette as a way to strip the work back to the raw and early love of mark-making. " Head in The Clouds is inspired by a time when the artist was young, things were difficult at home. She snuck into her sister's room to find some solitude. The sun was setting and in the autumn sky, the clouds formed an image of mountains. The artist recalls the deep desire for someone to come and rescue her from the imagined landscape, a knight in shining armour. In this painting, Genevieve Leavold seeks to capture that sense of longing and impermanence. The soft forms are contained and constrained by subsequent layers. She discovered with this series that her process needed to be immediate, to work into the wet paint in a single sitting. This process of painting gives the work rawness and simplicity. "I want the viewer to get a sense of the weightlessness of memory, the strange mixture of intensity and ephemera contained in childhood memories" Perhaps the truth is this. It is our adult self who rescues the child by honouring those childhood dreams.
