Head of an Athlete Painting

Ancient Greek and Roman sculptures frame my reference of “high art”. Gianni Versace’s early collections taught me how effective references of Classical Greek and Roman art can be to convey luxury. During my BFA, I inquired further into art histories of Ancient Greece and Rome and became enamored. This canvas was inspired by the New York Metropolitan’s “Marble head of an athlete” (138-192 AD). My interest in using permanent marker and watercolor began from referencing ancient works. I started to hope that my works, too, would endure the tests of time. I made my marks permanent, I left the canvas blank, and eventually the question of permanence haunted me. I was then drawn to balance these expectations with a more ephemerality, impermanent and delicate media: watercolor. This media choice alone became a surrender and my own memento mori. All of that was behind the what’s in view on this canvas. It’s the struggle that resulted to my dedication to this media. As the first canvas completed since graduation, I felt confident on how I wanted to express myself in my work moving forward. I use bring color to feel with, distinct and gestural lines to speak with, and combine compositions withal in hope to create a unique aura in each work. I shortly realized that this work certainly achieved and exceeded my expectations upon completion. I became so attached to how it enlivened my space that I felt hesitant to sell it. Now, however, I hope someone new may discover its presence in any collection and treasure it for years to come.
