ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I was inspired to begin the mosaic series when I moved from Rome to Heidelberg, Germany. This piece is made of hundreds of small segments. Each mosaic segment is watercolour on 300 gr. fabriano paper. They are cut, folded and assembled to make the final work. The mosaics are almost sculptural. They are like a map of a sequence of events of chance and surprise. I say this because I never know an outcome before I begin, so when segments do sit side by side then I can imagine a potential direction of the work. I suppose like thinking out loud or not knowing what you want to paint until it is done. Later, studies in Architecture took him to London and then to Rome, where he settled for a number of years before moving to Milan, and finally on to Berlin where he now lives and paints. Painting is his vocation, it has accompanied him everywhere. He is autodidact. He first paints sometimes hundreds of small individual abstract watercolours on 300 gram paper. Then he cuts and fold them, connecting each piece within a structure to compose a larger work. These watercolours border on sculptural - he calls them watercolour mosaics.
