ABOUT THE ARTWORK
As a fellow ocean and animal lover, hearing about the recent and tragic death of Rob Stewart moved me to create an artwork in his honour. Stewart was an award-winning biologist, photographer, conservationist and filmmaker of the documentary 'Sharkwater'. This 2006 documentary revealed the shocking truths about the shark finning trade, which lead to a worldwide awareness and campaign against the industry. His contribution to the conservation of sharks and his determination to shift peoples perspective on the nature of these animals is something I find extremely inspiring. This work is painted from a photograph that was taken during my own experience swimming with this Whale Shark in Puerto Escondido, Mexico 2011. 'Here's to you' is a tribute to a man that fostered a global shift in perspective. New Zealand born, Sydney based Artist, Jaimee Paul‘s main subject matter is animals. Both large and small inspired by her personal interactions as a child and overseas travels; ‘they have such personality, they’re so complex and every one is so different. I try to uncover their spirit… If only they could talk!’ Animals have a certain place and voice inside those that are listening. Art has the power to evoke emotions from audiences not usually partial to stare inside the eyes and soul of a furry being. Fostering personal connections between human viewer and animal subject I hope to fulfil my purpose of creating meaningful art leading to positive changes in today’s global climate. She is also known for her portraiture and she enjoys working with all mediums from watercolour to oils, always with a touch of realism. Favouring black and white, Jaimee’s illustrations are sensitive and have an uncanny likenesses to her subjects. Jaimee teaches Art classes in her studio she co-founded; La Creme Creative Inc. She is a founding member of artist-run gallery Sydney Road Gallery in Seaforth. She was awarded the Royal Doulton UNSW Art & Design Award in 2014. Her artworks and commissioned pieces are hung in private collections worldwide.
