“She was afraid of heights but she was much more afraid of never flying. She gladly took risks, got scared but did it anyway. She was life itself, wild and free, wonderfully chaotic, sunshine mixed with hurricane. So powerful, not because she wasn’t scared but because she went on despite the fear.” The text seen vaguely in the background, says all about the inspiration for this painting. When I wrote the poem I was full of energy, ready to conquer the world. The result became a serie of paintings growing in style and colors.

Pia Lilenthal is a contemporary street mix-media artist. She combines stencil work with multiple layers and techniques in the backgrounds. It could be watercolor, acrylic paint, screen printing, collages of stamps. Or a mix of them all. Portraits are a common motif, often women, containing details connected to the person in the different layers. Her background as graphic designer and long experience of making sketches digitally, comes handy when planning compositions and different color combinations. The final artwork though, is always made by hand.
