Painting: Ink, Gesso, Acrylic Wax and Shellac on Wood.
2018 was a beautiful long hot summer in the UK. This painting was inspired by several scorching runs through farmland in Hertfordshire. It was too hot for even the birds to sing. The wheat fields crackled and whispered, ripe and dry in a light wind. The earth under foot was split, dusty and hard. Everything seemed to shimmer with colour and light. This is a very joyful and uplifting painting and I hope it will bring a smile on a daily basis to someone sharing a home with it. I work with gesso because I apply the ink to the surface and then remove it, or work using wire wool and sandpaper - employing a sort of etching technique to push the ink into the surface and lift it off. This gives the painting a sense of depth and a physical presence.
