*Please note the white border above and under the image is not part of the painting* "Paint" is the most befitting way to describe the context of my work, its source being my inspiration, the vehicle and the visual. These paintings are a representational portrayal of my Liminal Series photographs, which capture the shifting gestures and marks of paint through manipulation; both physical and of its own accord. I do not dictate the theme, or the image of what is seen, only the composition of colours which are further affected by lighting. My initial study of the Rorschach Tests provides a conceptual structure for this painting; whilst also focussing on the materiality of paint, and its aesthetics. By concerning myself to the practice/process of painting and the marks it makes, I have allowed myself to become dictated by the paint in some regard, incorporating a sense of the haptic, the touch, of paint upon the canvas. Scale plays an important part to my work, as the image presented to the viewer does not define whether the image is conceivably portraying a snippet of something exceptionally large, or a magnification of something incredibly small; there is no specific indication. This ambiguity within the subject matter forms an important part of my work, hinting to the Rorschach undertone, allowing the viewer's imagination to impose their own individual idea of what they see, rather than one of my own and thus narrates what the image represents to them. The use of the diptych canvases, whilst acknowledging Rorschach’s inkblots, forces the viewer to separate the two halves but also to bring them together and make sense of the image. It also allows the viewer to see the subtle differences between the two, and therefore showing how the paint has been allowed to slightly take control.
