Martin Baran is a Prague-based artist working in video, sculpture, and mixed-media painting. His work explores the fragility and impermanence of human experience, questioning the ways in which individuals navigate and transform their identities over time. Through his practice, Baran confronts the transient nature of life, memory, and emotional states, creating immersive, sensory environments that evoke a deep sense of introspection and transformation. Baran's latest series, Transience, embodies his fascination with the passage of time and the constant flux of human existence. Drawing from both abstract and figurative traditions, the work interrogates how people evolve in response to external forces and internal shifts. Transience does not just depict the impermanence of physical things, but also explores the emotional and psychological landscapes that are shaped by change—whether subtle or radical. The series is built on the idea that, like human beings, moments in time are ever-shifting, never fully grasped or contained. The works in Transience combine video, organic materials, and dynamic paint techniques to challenge the viewer’s perception of time. Baran’s abstracted human forms—fragments of bodies suspended in fluid, ghostly landscapes—symbolize both presence and absence. Through these forms, Baran contemplates the tension between the desire for permanence and the inevitability of decay. His works do not provide answers, but instead create spaces for viewers to reflect on their own relationships with time, loss, and growth. At the core of Baran’s practice is an exploration of the human condition as it exists within the parameters of impermanence. Each piece serves as an invitation to reconsider what it means to live in a world defined by change. Baran’s sculptures, often rendered in materials that evolve or disintegrate over time, mirror the psychological state of changeability. Similarly, his video works blur the boundaries between the tangible and the ethereal, creating a layered experience that acknowledges how both personal and collective histories are shaped by transitory moments. Baran’s return to art after a period of reflection has given his work an even deeper layer of introspection. His art is now not only a reflection of his own journey through time but also a meditation on how others experience transformation.
