About The Artwork
This work is part of a broader body of work which deals with my clashing culture of Ireland and California. In this painting, my Irish friend, who is smoking, recently lost his childhood friend to suicide by hanging. He is holding a pair of scissors because he wishes he could have cut the rope and feels guilty. The figures behind him, represent other people who have committed suicide. The 3 figures are mirrored by 3 magpies flying overhead. Three, being a sacred number, especially in Celtic culture The magpie represents Ireland to me as I always noticed them when I grew up there. The setting is set in the Irish landscape. The tree in the picture is painted with thick textural paint, to represent bark. In the thick paint of the bark of the tree, I carved out, "Ian was here", as a memento to the recently deceased friend.

I am a fine artist originating from Ireland, currently based in southern California, who focuses on narrative based figure painting. I was born in California and moved to Ireland at the age of seven. I returned to California at the age of 18 to pursue my passion for art. I actively attend art workshops, own my own portrait painting business and am currently taking portrait commissions. I earned my BFA for drawing and painting from Cal State University, Long Beach, and my studio arts degree and narrative illustration certificate from Orange Coast College. I have been exhibited in numerous fine art galleries and museums such as the University Art Museum (UAM) in Long Beach, The National Gallery of Ireland, The Crawford Art Museum, Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion, The Orange County Center for Contemporary Art (OCCCA) and the Irvine Fine Arts Center.
