ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work was inspired by Giovanni Battista Cima da Conegliano's painting The Incredulity of Saint Thomas. The original painting depicts the Biblical scene where Saint Thomas, doubting Christ's resurrection, places his hand into the wounds of the risen Jesus to confirm His identity, transitioning from doubt to belief. In this contemporary reinterpretation, a banker is depicted sipping from Christ's wound through a cocktail straw. The artist uses this imagery to critique how modern values of greed and the pursuit of profit—along with the resulting moral decay—undermine and replace virtues, hope, and the future of humanity. Observing modern society, one cannot help but feel a profound sense of incredulity at the state it has reached.
