A flurry of goldfish swimming in translucent blues, turquoise, and pinks, fish were high lighted with gold, bronze and copper metallic watercolour. I drew my inspiration for this and many of my underwater scenes from spending many hours in the sea in Seychelles, while I lived there.

Elizabeth Sadler grew up in a small village in Cambridgeshire, where she spent long days walking and cycling through fields and quiet country lanes. From an early age, she was captivated by the intricate detail of plants and insects, as well as the vastness of distant horizons — themes that continue to inform her work today. In 1983, she emigrated to Seychelles, where she lived and worked for 31 years as both a freelance artist and a farmer. During this time, she established a strong presence in the local art community. Her first solo exhibition of botanical work was held at the Alliance Française in 1985, followed by a second in 1991. She participated in numerous exhibitions across the islands and maintained an open studio on Mahé. Internationally, her work has been exhibited and sold in prestigious venues, including Liberty’s in London in 1986, a Paris gallery in the 1990s, and the Parallax Art Fair in Chelsea, London, in 2016. She has been honoured to count among her patrons members of several Arab State Royal Families, and her paintings are held in private collections worldwide, particularly in Russia, the former Czechoslovakia, France, and Germany. In 2014, Architectural Designer Andres Escobar drew inspiration from one of her large marine watercolours to create a glass mural for the H Hotel ( rebranded STORY Seychelles) in Seychelles. Elizabeth Sadler now lives in the Fens, where she draws continual inspiration from the surrounding landscape, plants, and wildlife, as well as from her travels throughout Great Britain and abroad. The pleasure she derives from painting and the passion she brings to her work are reflected in her varied subject matter and the vibrant colour that characterises both her watercolours and oil paintings. “Elizabeth Sadler created watercolours of great sensitivity. Like Marianne North Sadler demanded high standards of accuracy from herself, controlling that most challenging of media in order to record, deconstruct and eventually present her subjects as things of intense and fragile beauty. However, Sadler developed her work beyond the illustrative, creating complex allegorical paintings which the artist labelled ‘ enigmas’. These compositions used symbolic decorative elements to create balance and harmony, with some works seeming to combine material observed through a microscope with recognizable forms such as leaves and fruits.
