Jazz-7 Painting

Jazz is an emotional, free flowing and self-expressive style of music. Jazz stimulates my creativity, especially when I am working with abstract painting. The key element of jazz is improvisation, commonly structured around a repetitive call-and-response pattern. Avant-garde or free-jazz even abandons the strict notion of chord progression, allowing the individual musicians to improvise freely within the context of a given scale or mode. Abstract painting is similar to jazz music in that it is not strictly structural. The free-flow of the mind is allowed and the illusions formed of colour are guided by our sentiment. Intensity and saturation are supported by the artist’s passion. Freedom of expression and constant transformations are the essence and magic of both abstract painting and jazz music. Improvisation in abstract painting is in the design and composition, the ways colours are distributed and the shapes and forms appear. The dynamic flow dominates; the subordinate segment supports the work in its total entity. Abstract painting goes beyond technical skill as it aims at sharing artist’s sense and sensibility. In this series, Jazz, a linear structure is the main skeleton directing and diverting the flow of energy. The “line” is improvised with various sections of colours and forms in both disparate and corresponding manners. The parts echo each other as the musical chords and rhythms that outline the song structure complement the jazz soloist. The textural surfaces in Jazz have more than ornamental function. They generate explicit details of the artwork. Observed closely, Jazz becomes a virtual piece of music wherein you could experience the melody and rhythm echoing in your ears, except that it is happening on a two dimensional, visual scale.
