ABOUT THE ARTWORK
These kannas are from a garden in Paul Roux Street in Bloemfontein, South Africa. When I was a child living in the Free State everybody had beautiful gardens on their pavements but these days they hide inside the perimeters of the fences. Kannas are not true lilies and are originally tropical plants but they seem to grow very well here. I saw these when I was having a very dismall day but they did make me stop and look and feel better. It was the first time I really saw and liked them - a visual blast from the past.

I have always believed that there’s beauty everywhere, if I can’t see it I keep looking. Even though my subject matter is mostly plants and people there is usually some philosophical element that made me paint it. I see the the concept of life in so many things and life itself is still a very wonderous affair. Art to me, creates windows in space and take us to places beyond our confinements.
