Kenmore Square No. 1 Painting

First of mRowntree's watercolor series of Boston's Kenmore Square featuring the iconic Citgo sign. Kenmore Square seen from Beacon Street beautifully frames the Citgo sign above colorful interlocking building shapes. The scene is at once charming, but also incongruous for the outsize scale of this huge 60' by 60' sign. In this first painting of the scene Rowntree was faithful to capturing the true characteristics of Kenmore Square -- without adding much in the way of the atmosphere or drama. But this work is important for that -- a genuine study of the buildings and geography to build upon later. A classical colored matte and gilded gold frame would work nicely for this piece. Part of every Boston University student's and Red Sox fan's collective subconscious, the Citgo sign is under threat of urban development again. All Rowntree's watercolors are titled and signed "mRowntree" in pencil beneath the artwork.
