After a brief, but successful career as a freelance textile designer, I had a long hiatus away from the world of art and design. Only returning in earnest at the beginning of 2014, producing hand-painted papers that I often collage together, to produce mainly abstract and highly textural artworks. 'Are there any truly unspoiled exotic locations left to discover? That is the question Alan poses as he returns to Gloucester Road’s pop-up art space, Gallery40 with an exhibition full of atmospheric and lyrical works. The collection is united by the belief that "after the plundering, years of neglect and souvenir hunting, all that remains are fragments of architectural and decorative surfaces". And the result is a body of intriguing abstracts with layers of interest to captivate the viewer. Alan’s early career was in textile design. Perhaps this explains the subtle synergy he creates between decorative elements and textured surfaces to imbue each work with mystery and meaning using gouache, gold paint and gold-leaf.' Brighton Arty ''When we viewed Alan’s recent portfolio of work, we were immediately impressed by the breadth and depth of the content – and its complete ‘hang-ability’ in any home setting. The work is modestly priced and we were convinced that this collection should be seen and enjoyed by a new audience. It is skillful and has a craftsman’s understanding and character. Definitely one to watch.'' Doubtfire Gallery
