Animation and the private lives of images- and their subjects- is a central tenet of my work. The disinterest in quality, its general abandonment, usually occurs as I impatiently work to find a narrative. As something is loaded onto the work, there is a relaxation somewhere else: stuff, odds and sods, strange people doing strange things, me doing strange things, an expression of a stuffed animal or a gentleman in a classical portrait. Usually it's humour or something culturally benevolent and exotic and I relate to the work in the same sense as maybe Martin Parr does, or Mike Leigh. However, I do feel a resistance to the terms "the uncanny" and "the everyday". I also enjoy Poussin in that his work is like a snapshot into a scene, or a place quite inaccessible. I also try to imbue a sense of history where I am not abusing my position as an artist and just messing about with whatever pleases me - which does happen... Essentially I am trying to seek a balance between learning something and enjoyment.
