At a time when many artists are abandoning their brushes and easels for visual expressions that are subject to current fashions, G.C. continues to believe in the poetic power of figurative painting. He defines himself as a craftsman of the imagination and advocates for an artistic modernity that embraces the concordance of the times. Gilles Chambon's first paintings, in the 1980s, were watercolors depicting fantastical cities (some are reproduced in the philosophical science-fiction tale Souvenirs d'Antillia, which he published in 2007). He then devoted himself more to oil painting, in larger formats: portraits, landscapes, lived memories, and above all, surrealist-inspired compositions that playfully reinterpret some of the great subjects of classical painting, such as the Annunciation, the Transfiguration, the Entry into Jerusalem, and Luncheon on the Grass. At the same time, he also produces thematic series of quick drawings on paper, using Indian ink, watercolor, or oil paint. Gilles Chambon readily acknowledges his ties to Surrealism in general and to Dali et Chirico in particular. He is currently working on "synchronistic" painting (referring to C.G. Jung's synchronicity), which brings together fragments and reminiscences of pictorial heritage from all periods and styles in a single work.
