This original encaustic painting has a mixture of blues and reds. There is a great deal of texture that adds to the beauty of the abstract painting. A shellac burn was done as the finishing touch adding a nice glossy look. It portrays tranquility while providing a great mix of colors and textures.

Encaustic painting is an ancient art form dating back 2000 years to the Greeks. The process begins with heating a beeswax and dammer resin mixture and adding pigment for color. The liquid wax is painted on the surface which cools and hardens instantly. A torch is used to fuse each layer of wax together which allows encaustic artwork to be extremely

Rachel Nelson is an encaustic artist. Encaustic art is an ancient technique dating back 2000 years to the Greeks. Enkaustikos is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in”. Encaustic painting is done using natural elements of molten beeswax and damar resin which is crystallized tree sap. From the first moment Rachel touched the flame of a torch to the encaustic wax, she was mesmerized by the transformation of the wax in form and texture. She loves the unpredictability of what the flame unfolds and how the molten wax moves across the canvas. Rachel has studios in Washington and Arizona.
